Established in 2006 by H Street Community Development Corporation, Global Scholars Foundation (formerly Community Global Initiative) provides students ages 14-17 from DC public schools and DC public charter schools an opportunity to develop global competency by learning the culture and language of other countries.
Scholars are immersed in a one-year intensive study – delving deeply into the history and culture of select countries. Before our scholars travel anywhere, they set about touring Washington, DC to discover their own rich history and the treasures in their backyard. During the course of the program, students travel to other states within the U.S. to absorb regional culture, visit museums, and see exhibits. Scholars also attend literary events featuring local writers; hear elected officials share their vision for the city; and are inspired by teachers and community leaders who support their vision.
GSF partners with the diplomatic community, and scholars are taken on tours of Embassies and learn first hand from people from the countries we study.
The teens develop an appreciation for cultural differences; they begin to understand global issues like international conflict, health care, education and environmental concerns. They begin to see themselves as a part of something larger, a part of global solutions.
